Sal Khan Podcast Reflection
Sal Khan's feature on the Art of Power podcast gave me an array of "food for thought" moments. First, it was nice to learn about how he started his nonprofit organization, Khan Academy. In high school, I was never a fan of math and a lot of that attributed to a lack of motivational teachers who taught the subject well. I am more of an English and writing lover, so naturally math and the sciences were difficult for me. Khan Academy video's helped me a lot during the time that I had no other source of help. I love that Sal had a really good paying job working for a hedge fund and decided he wanted to do something more meaningful with his time. Now fast forward many years later, he is one of the most well known names when it comes to online educational resources.
A few moments in this interview stood out to me, the first was his interaction with his family member, a young girl who wanted help with her school work. Sal helped her via video call and internet interactions which gave me a glimmer of hope for the possibility to do online learning successfully. Another moment that stood out to me was learning about Sal's family dynamics and how he came from a less than perfect family, he turned that strife and turned it into a confident stride. I believe this is possible to all learners, I also come from a family who had it's fair share of ups and downs in stability but a constant for me was the ability to take my education seriously and try to gain knowledge consistently. One of Sal's mantras "Decide what is the right thing to do and do it." really aligns with my over-all view on teaching and life.
"Decide what is the right thing to do and do it." If life could be so easy....
